THIERRY ESCAICH (b. 1965)
Concerto for Violin and Oboe (U.S. Premiere–New York Philharmonic Co-commission) French composer Gérard Condé has said that Thierry Escaich is driven by “a need for immediate expression: he seeks only to give … a tangible form to the alchemy of his inner universe. The expression of life is at the heart of his music.” Escaich has been the organist at Saint-Étienne-de-Mont in Paris since 1997 (a position held previously by the renowned Maurice Duruflé) and has created some 100 compositions in all genres, from solo works to opera, performed by renowned artists across the world and honored by prestigious prizes. In reviews of New York City Ballet, another commissioned score by Thierry Escaich was described by The New York Times as evoking “a wide range of 20th-century musical scores” and in a subsequent review as “swooping, cinematic.”
